Sacrifice - 7

Furniture Design

This table was inspired by a couple who have made a lot of hidden sacrifices. Most people only see the success of people but few see their sacrifices. This table is designed to honour their sacrifice and story, and at the same time encourage you to share yours.

The concept was developed over a few weeks. The final representation is a clean, refined table echoing our first impressions of someone. Then hidden beneath the table, a multitude of grooves symbolising all the sacrifices made along the way. Initially, Matt considered using a machine to create the grooves, however, this would lose its personality and texture. So instead began the arduous process of hand carving each groove. There are a total of 264 grooves which required over 25 000 hammer strikes. Each groove was purposely carved to the width of your finger, to encourage you to feel the rough surface and evoke your curiosity.

Matt’s hope is this inspires a new conversation which fosters understanding and encouragement.

”Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
